I’m Jenelle Hovde. I write sweet Regency romance with a touch of mystery and gothic atmosphere for Tyndale House Publishers, cozy WWII mysteries, and biblical historical fiction for Guideposts. I also illustrate for publishers and fellow authors. Somewhere in the middle of all that, I homeschool three children and help my husband as he pastors a small country church. And yes… I do drink a copious amount of coffee.

Today I’m sharing a little about my upcoming Regency romance, The Light of Stars, which releases July 14 with Tyndale House Publishers.

An arranged marriage. A powerful company tainted with corruption. Two souls caught between obligation and the search for their true calling in a world stretching from glittering London ballrooms to the markets of Calcutta.

When Kitty Grenville’s grandfather announces her engagement to Sebastian Sinclair, she’s appalled. She barely remembers the boy she once met as a child—and now he’s a man tied to the East India Company, the very organization Kitty blames for tearing her family apart years ago in Hyderabad. Determined to protect both her independence and her passion for astronomy, Kitty plans to refuse the match.

But writing this story led me down a fascinating historical path. The East India Company was not just a background detail in the Regency era—it shaped everyday life in ways many people never realized.

For example, consider something as ordinary as tea.

Tea, Opium, and the Hidden Story Behind Regency Elegance

When we picture the Regency era, we often imagine quiet drawing rooms and the ritual of afternoon tea. Yet behind that elegant tradition lay a complicated global trade network.

By the early 1800s, tea had become essential in Britain. But it could only be purchased from China, which required payment in silver. As silver drained from Britain, merchants turned to a troubling solution.

Opium grown in British-controlled India was sold to Chinese traders, who paid for it in silver. That silver was then used to buy tea for Britain.

In other words, the same empire that supplied the tea in Regency teacups was deeply entangled in the opium trade.

The world of the Regency was elegant on the surface—but beneath the porcelain cups and polite conversation lay a far more complicated global story.

Now, for the very important stuff regarding this hunt…
